At 3:20pm on March 23rd all of BHSEC was called to the auditorium for a special assembly. After several minutes of confusion, Principal Ray Peterson took the stage. In a brief but emotional speech, he announced his retirement from the school. Students were shocked; no one had expected the news. For many, it took days to process what they had heard.

As of April 20, 2010, BHSEC enforced a new rule regarding the use of the public field by the student body. Under the new regulations, BHSEC students would not be allowed to use the field at all while an outdoor gym class was in session.

Hundreds Gather to Celebrate the Life of Wynne Wu

On Sunday, May 2, hundreds of relatives, friends, colleagues, and former Bard students gathered to celebrate the life of Wynne Wen-Ren Wynne at the Congregation Beth Elohim Temple House in Brooklyn. Ms. Wu passed away on April 23, 2010 from metastasized breast cancer. The service was at turns poignant, funny, and inspirational. As Ms. Wu hoped, it was a celebration of life rather than the mourning of death.

Last week BHSEC was joined by a group of foreign students from China. These six students whose English names are Bridge, Alex, Jing-Jing Paris, Eleanor, and Arthur, are part of an exchange program between their school, Yali, and BHSEC.

Ms. Poreba Brings New Perspective to Seminar Curriculum

Year I students signing up for spring semester classes were greeted with a surprise! For the first time in her career, Elizabeth Poreba will be teaching a section of Year I seminar. Ms. Poreba is usually a 9th and 10th grade English teacher but when she discovered that a new section of first year seminar was being created, she volunteered to teach the class.
Physics Teacher Dr. Jovanovic Resigns

Recently, physics teacher Dr. Bozidar Jovanovic announced his resignation from BHSEC. Due to financial reasons he has decided to continue the profession he pursued before coming to Bard, working in quantitative finance. He isn’t thrilled to leave his teaching career behind, but remarked, “life is hard and when it gives you tough decisions, you must act accordingly.”

On Saturday, February 6th, the BHSEC PTA will be hosting a new fundraiser called Knowledge College. The event will give BHSEC parents, and anyone else interested, an opportunity to go back to college for a day and take engaging courses offered by BHSEC faculty and others.

Raptors Soar Into the A-Division

The BHSEC boys soccer team remained a strong presence in the New York City B-division this year despite a disappointing loss in the playoffs. The Bard Raptors won an impressive eleven out of twelve games during the season and made it to the quarterfinals of the playoffs. With only two losses in the past three years, the Raptors have shown consistent dominance in the B-division. The PSAL has taken notice and recently invited the Raptors to join the A-division.
Spanish Exchange Students Arrive at BHSEC

On Saturday, November 21st, 13 American teenagers gathered with their parents in Terminal 4 of JFK International Airport. Two and a half hours later, these students, selected by BHSEC to take part in an international exchange program with the High School of Jesus and Maria in Valladolid, Spain, were still waiting outside JFK’s Au Bon Pan. “My legs hurt,” says Alejandro Anasal, one of the BHSEC students in the program, “but I was excited to meet them.”
